The Hiei is a Kongou-class battleship.

Description

The Hiei sports a unique superstructure that sets it apart from its sister ships Kongou, Haruna, and Kirishima. Hiei served as a test bed for such a design, which would be adopted by the Yamato-class battleships.

The Hiei's keel was laid down in Yokosuka, but its parts were manufactured in the United Kingdom. The Hiei is equipped with eight Vickers 14-inch guns that can fire a full salvo in a minute. Its armor is around half that of the Yamato-class battleships but still thick enough to protect it from destroyer-caliber guns.

As with the training vessels in Hai-Furi, most of the Hiei's systems are automated, allowing a small complement to operate it efficiently.

History

The Hiei sallied out after the opening ceremony on its maritime exercise. However, as the incident of "mutinying" ships grew serious, the school lost contact with the Hiei, along with several other ships, to the virus.

The Harekaze stumbled upon the Hiei near Chuuk Lagoon. Noma mistakenly identified it as the Musashi due to its similar superstructure, but a closer look at the twin-turret main guns corrected her. The Harekaze sprang into action to stop the Hiei from spreading the infection to a busy maritime hub of more than 10,000 residents and 1,000 ships.

The Hiei followed the Harekaze into a rocky labyrinth, where it ran aground due to the changing tides. Its crew were cured of the virus.

Later, the Hiei joined the Harekaze's last fight against the Musashi, along with the battlecruiser Admiral Graf Spee, destroyers Maikaze and Hamakaze, and the Littoral Combat Ship Tenjin. She drew fire from the Musashi long enough for the Harekaze to get into position to raid the ship.

Trivia

  • Like its sister ships, the Hiei is named after a mountain, Mt. Hiei, on the border between Kyoto and Shiga Prefectures.
